Lexus registers LFA trademark with USPTO

Lexus registers LFA trademark with USPTO
Speculation that the Lexus LF-A supercar project had been axed several months ago was refuted to some degree by ongoing testing of the car at the Nurburgring. Now a filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has breathed new life into the car's possible production, though the company still hasn''t officially confirmed the car.

The trademark filing, first dug up by AutoSpies, was made December 1, 2008. While information contained in the official document is understandably sparse, the name is registered for use as the name of 'automobiles and structural parts thereof'. Also of note is the absence of the hyphen previously found in the car's name, changing the name from LF-A to LFA.

Test versions of the car spotted in testing are believed to house a 5.0L V10 engine rated at 500hp (373kW). A company executive speaking earlier this year revealed that the car's price, if it did head to production, would "begin with a two." That puts the LFA in league with the Ferrari F430, Lamborghini Gallardo and similar exotics.

A roadster version could also be in the works, previewed by a concept version at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show.

Lexus VP says four new models rolling out next year

Lexus VP says four new models rolling out next year
Lexus already launched the 2010 RX range of SUVs at the LA Motor Show a couple of weeks ago, and now Lexus' vice-president Mark Templin has revealed that the Japanese luxury automaker will be rolling out three new models next year. Two of these are already confirmed, with both the IS convertible and a dedicated hybrid model both penciled in for production, leaving just one mystery car in the pipeline.

Toyota's Chief Katsuaki Watanabe confirmed that the dedicated hybrid would appear at next year's Detroit Motor Show, stating that it will be the venue for "staging world premiers of two all-new, dedicated hybrids, one for Toyota and one for Lexus." These new cars will be conventional hybrids, similar to the current Prius, in which an electric motor works in tandem with an internal combustion petrol engine and the Lexus model will be known as the HS250h.

Meanwhile the Lexus IS convertible is well on track for a 2009 release. The convertible version of the IS is denoted by the letter C and is available initially in IS250C and IS350C trim, going on sale in the first half of 2009, for the U.S. and Europe.

The new power-retractable hardtop roof is constructed from aluminum and folds away in just 20 seconds. It has been styled to offer minimal wind turbulence when driving with the top down, and when the top is up cabin noise is said to be the same as the sedan.

The final mystery car could be turn out to be any one of a number of vehicles that Lexus is working on, although some sources are reporting that it may be a high-performance variant for the LS range, similar to the IS-F. Other rumors state that a new GX could be in the works, and since being introduced 5 years ago with few significant modifications since then, the GX mid-size SUV may be just about ready for a new generation.

Review: 2008 Lexus IS-F

Review: 2008 Lexus IS-F
The Lexus IS-F is something of an oddball in Lexus' lineup. The company is working hard to get a more serious performance edge to its products, including launching its 'F-Sport' performance line of aftermarket parts, but the truth is few hardcore performance enthusiasts think Lexus when they want to go fast. There is undoubtedly ample justification for that sentiment elsewhere in the Lexus lineup, but when it comes to the IS-F, things are different.

This car has something almost no other Lexus I've ever driven has exhibited in any perceptible degree: personality. Far from the bland and obeisant cars found elsewhere in the lineup - even bearing the IS tag - the raucous and bawdy IS-F is the real black sheep of the flock.

Styling and Exterior
The IS-F is, in almost every aesthetic sense, a mildly hopped-up IS. An aggressive body kit, wide front air intakes and extractors behind the front wheel arches make up the major visual nods toward the 5.0L V8 that lives under the hood.

Inside, even fewer concessions to the car's high-performance nature have been made, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Eschewing the woody and often oddly leathery interiors found in the GS and LS range, the IS series features an almost skin-like rubber substance for its dash and interior, complemented appropriately by durable plastic and aluminum pieces. Far from seeming cheap, at least in my eye, the interior comes off as focused and driver-oriented - at first.

A particularly nice touch is the white carbon-fiber-look center console and door accent trim. The brightness really offsets the otherwise dark and mildly oppressive cabin, and the carbon-fiber treatment gives the car one more touch of performance-oriented flair.

The rear seat's lack of room is worth mentioning, but it's hardly noteworthy. The 3-series, C-Class, Infiniti G35, and essentially every other mid-size luxury sedan on earth all lack much in the way of room in the back seat. It's for children, packages, and occasional trips with adults, not cross-country touring.

Technical
The 5.0L V8 under the hood of the IS-F is anything but ordinary, despite its derivation from the LS-series. Rated at 416hp (310kW) and 371lb-ft (502Nm) of torque, the engine pulls readily from any RPM, and keeps right on pulling to redline.

But the music starts at about 4,000rpm. That's when the vacuum valve opens up the secondary intake box and the car can really breathe. The sound of that tuned length of air vibrating as it enters the now-howling V8 engine, combined with the blatty note of the exhaust is an aural delight every gearhead or hotshoe should experience at least once in their lives.

That exhaust note may appear to be piped through two pairs of stacked oval pipes out back, but in reality those are just pretty plastic pieces molded into the bumper for show - the real exhaust outlets are unremarkable, thin and made of plain steel. A cursory squat behind the car will prove this unfortunate fact, and in a sense, this minor deception encapsulates the nature of the car.

Once you're done dancing on the accelerator, there's surprisingly little to backup the car's promise. No manual transmission is available; instead an eight-speed automatic with paddle-shifters is standard. Set the car into full sport mode by toggling some switches and the eight-cog system behaves well enough, but there will be no really on-the-edge driving here without compromise.
Perhaps it's a personal bias I have toward doing my own shifting, maybe it's a lack of faith in computers, but the element of car control that's taken away with the automatic gearbox is downright annoying when it comes to driving the IS-F hard. The paddle shifters work well enough, the transmission is surprisingly quick for an automatic when in sport mode, and it even rev-matches (sort of), but the big picture is still a feeling of being held back.

Other aspects of the car's arsenal are similarly hit-and-miss. The brakes are strong and confidence-inspiring, repeating their work readily in back-roads driving. The suspension balance, on the other hand, tends toward being a bit too soft for seriously quick transitional work, and overall chassis balance is viciously biased toward snap oversteer - be very careful completely disabling traction control, especially if it's wet out, though in the right hands it can still be balanced on the edge.

On the Road
During the daily bits, however, it's perfect. Docile, demure and even doddering - all adjectives that can happily be used to describe the IS-F as you one-hand the car around neighborhood bends, soaking up the bumps with the relatively compliant suspension on the way to work, spilling not a drop of coffee. Passengers will never notice the '-F'-ness of the car, so long as the driver keeps their right foot from getting itchy, and the IS-F melts into the background of simply driveable passenger vehicles. Oh, it'll leap to freeway speed and beyond after a brief lag when you bury the pedal, but otherwise it's perfectly passive.

All of that might sound like anathema to the enthusiast that wants to be seen in their hot sedan, but the Lexus is a supremely capable daily driver in a way that many more hardcore vehicles simply can't be. And perhaps that's Lexus' brand of performance - it performs best in the 99% of the situations it will actually be driven, giving up the last 10% of its performance for civility and comfort.

Fuel efficiency will leave a bit to be desired, though, if the IS-F is put to the commuter test. Rated at 16mpg city and 23mpg highway, my real-world average under a mix of moderate city and highway use with a few good floggings thrown in was just a tick under 13mpg - abysmal by modern standards, but right about what one would expect from a 400hp+ V8 sedan.

Cruising at speed can net efficiency in the mid- to upper-20s, however, so only urban warriors need worry seriously about the fuel-eating tendencies of the car. Long-distance commuters likely won't see more than $500 difference in a yearly fuel bill against an economical 35mpg highway sedan or hatch. Not that IS-F buyers are concerned with price, that is.

Equipment and Features
For the $64,178 sticker price of the car we tested (including a $765 delivery fee), the IS-F's feature list is best described as disappointing. In truth, those IS-series interior bits that seemed so charmingly utilitarian now seem horrifically overpriced, and the woeful lack of hardcore driver's features now takes center stage.

Yes, the car has satellite navigation, leather seating, electric seats with excellent bolsters and memory functions, a six-disc CD changer, a truly brilliant Mark Levinson DVD audio system and all the appropriate power goodies, including a sunroof, but the sum total leaves one feeling like they're driving a hot-rodded entry-level luxury sedan - hey, wait a minute...

For the same price, a person could buy a better-equipped BMW 335i, throw a suspension package on it, modify the exterior however one sees fit and upgrade the ECU to get the most out of the twin-turbo 3.0L six-cylinder, likely pushing past the 400hp (298kW) mark. The result would be a car to equal or beat the IS-F in every performance sense, somewhat nicer inside, available with a manual transmission, and still as much as $5,000 cheaper, not to mention completely personalized.

Even the 451hp (336kW) C63 AMG starts out at a relatively bargain price of $56,300, nearly $2,000 below the base price of the IS-F. Things like the pre-collision system and dynamic radar cruise (a $2,850 option on our car) may be overkill, but even without them, the IS-F isn't the relative steal it needs to be to make up the performance deficit. The M3 sedan starts at an even more affordable $54,500 and offers yet another alternative that's unlikely to disappoint.

Final Verdict
Fun to drive, but not seriously fun, comfortable and practical, but hard to justify in value terms, the Lexus IS-F shoehorns itself into the high-performance mid-size luxury sedan segment with a host of compromises, but not a lot going for it in any one dimension.

It's a very well-rounded car, however, unlikely to bite unless provoked and still providing an accessible level of performance for the uninitiated. Maybe that makes this car great, a sort of bourgeois homage to the driving-proletariat, a performance-luxe sedan for the people, but in the eyes of a self-described enthusiast, the IS-F pulls up a bit short of the mark.

Still, it's a commendable effort from Lexus, a success in most measures when taken on its own merits, and certainly the most interesting, thought-provoking and downright desirable car in the company's fleet.

Lexus confirms 2010 RX SUV, IS Convertible and updated LS for L.A. Auto Show

Lexus confirms 2010 RX SUV, IS Convertible and updated LS for L.A. Auto Show
The Los Angeles Auto Show will play host to the world premiere of the 2010 Lexus RX SUV, with the Japanese luxury brand confirming today that both the new RX 450h hybrid and RX 350 will be on show at next week’s event. You can check out previously leaked images of the RX SUVs here, which reveal a longer, wider, and taller model than the current version.

Recently revealed at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, the 2010 IS Convertible will also be making its North American debut in L.A. The IS 250C and IS 350C convertibles feature a lightweight aluminum three-panel roof, which means that they should be heavier and less rigid than their sedan counterparts. The IS 250C will come with a 2.5L 204hp (152kW) V6 engine mated to a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, while the IS 350C gets a 3.5L, 306hp (228kW) V6 with a six-speed automatic.

Despite looking similar to the sedan model, only the bonnet, headlamps, door handles and mirrors are shared with the IS saloon. All other body panels have been redesigned exclusively for the convertible. These include a new fog light design, a steeply raked windscreen and a sleek new roof profile. At the rear there are new lamp clusters with LEDs and a high-mounted LED stop light integrated in the boot lip spoiler.

Also making their North American debut at the L.A. event will be the 2009 Lexus LS 460 and LS 460L sedans, plus their respective AWD variants.

Both the new RX and IS convertible isn’t due to hit the streets until the first half of next year, however the new LS range will go on sale in December.

Toyota expected to post first annual sales drop in a decade

Toyota expected to post first annual sales drop in a decade
While most of its rivals all reported significant losses through the first half of 2008, Toyota managed to increase market share to 16.8% and post a $3.8 billion profit for the second quarter. Despite this, both analysts and the carmaker itself are predicting a drop in year-on-year sales volumes for the first time since 1999.

Japan’s Nikkei business daily reports that Toyota will post a drop in sales for the current year, with the final tally coming in 2% lower than last year’s total of 8.43 million vehicles. Toyota recently revised its global sales targets for 2008, adjusting the total down from the 9.85 million cars it had expected at the start of the year to a more realistic 9.5 million.

However, it is now hopeful of achieving about 8.3 million sales worldwide. As for the U.S., the carmaker is only predicting 2.45 million sales for 2008, compared to 2007's tally of 2.6 million it sold across its Toyota, Lexus and Scion brands.

While the Toyota brand itself is expected to sell around 8.3 million units, when combined with its subsidiaries Daihatsu and Hino sales are expected to reach 9.3 million units - still around 700,000 less than last year's 9.37 million sales for the entire Toyota group.

The fall in sales this year has been attributed to a combination of factors, although the current credit crunch and recent high fuel prices are claimed to be the main driving forces behind the drop.

Despite its dropping sales, Toyota has not been affected as badly as its competitors. While 2008 may have been the worst year for the carmaker in more than a decade, its market share compared to most of its rivals has not changed and in many cases has actually improved. As one spokesman put it, Toyota now has a larger piece of a smaller pie and that will allow it to build a larger customer base once sales pick up.

2010 Lexus RX SUV likely to make Los Angeles Auto Show debut

2010 Lexus RX SUV likely to make Los Angeles Auto Show debut
The next-generation Lexus RX SUV will reportedly make its world debut in full production trim at next month’s Los Angeles Auto Show before going on sale early next year as a 2010 model. Prototypes for the new RX have been spotted testing in Germany in recent months, revealing a familiar shape to the current model but with larger proportions overall and new head and tail-lights. The prototypes also confirm that Lexus’ LF-Xh hybrid SUV concept from last year’s Tokyo Motor Show is a close representation of what to expect, however the show car’s LED headlights are likely to be replaced with conventional bi-xenon units for production.

As previously reported, the new RX will be longer, wider, taller and heavier than its predecessor. Interestingly, weight is expected to rise by a significant 640lbs, bringing the SUV’s total kerb weight to a substantial 4,510lbs. These larger dimensions, however, are likely to pave way for a seven-seat capacity, reports The Car Connection.

In North America, the base RX will feature a 3.5L V6 with power bumped up to 280hp (209kW) over the current RX350’s 275hp (205kW) output. Torque will also be bumped up by 6lb-ft (8Nm). Other upgrades include the addition of a new six-speed automatic in place of the current model’s five-speed, as well as Lexus’ Super Electronically Controlled gearshift program and hill-start assist.

The RX400h hybrid model will return, arriving one year after the release of the standard petrol model, and should feature an uprated V6 hybrid drive system with close to 400hp (298kW) on tap. A new petrol V8 model could also be offered for the first time.

Production of the new RX range will start at the end of year with first sales expected in the first quarter of 2009.

HKS now offering add-on speed delimiter for Lexus IS F

HKS now offering add-on speed delimiter for Lexus IS F
The Lexus IS F is something of an enigma - at once an entry-level luxury sedan and a performance beast, offering legitimate power figures but hampered somewhat by its automatic transmission. Another of the problems those that ply their IS Fs on the track may have bumped into is the speed limiter - set at an already lofty 170mph (273km/h). That's no longer a concern thanks to the Japanese tuners at HKS.

A simple box wires into the car's ECU and overrides the speed limiter, letting the car go as fast as it can, restricted only by power, aerodynamic drag, gearing and the intestinal fortitude of the driver.

With a 5.0L V8 pulling at 416hp (311kW), the IS F is capable of surpassing the electronic limiter, though by how much isn't clear. At any rate, there are other modifications that owners can perform to their IS Fs that would thoroughly justify the removal of the limiter, including turbocharging, nitrous and other performance-adding enhancements.

One fine example of a turbocharged IS F is the SEMA car to be shown by Artisan Performance. Rated at 600hp (450kW), the turbocharged IS F has a rebuilt engine to withstand the abuse, including new pistons and connecting rods and an up-rated radiator. With that much power on tap, 170mph (273km/h) could be passed with relative ease, and 200mph (320km/h) could be within sight, though aerodynamic factors tend to increase dramatically at such speeds.

The HKS speed limiter lifter is available now (in Japan at least) for ¥157,500, or about $1,550.

Lexus confirms compact car, but not for U.S.

Lexus confirms compact car, but not for U.S.
Lexus is unlikely to launch a model positioned below the IS250 in the United States but that doesn’t mean it won’t develop a new entry-level car for other markets. One possibility is Europe, where premium hatchbacks sell in substantial numbers.

The carmaker’s executive vice president Tokuichi Uranishi has previously hinted that a model positioned below the current IS could be launched to help reach an internal goal of 150,000 sales in Europe by 2015. Now, the managing director for its European division, Tadashi Arashima, has confirmed in an interview with Germany’s WirtschaftsWoche newspaper that Lexus will eventually launch a new compact car.

“We will offer a Lexus in the compact class,” he told reporters, explaining that the company needs “smaller and more efficient vehicles” to meet Europe’s CO2 emissions regulations. He described the car as being a rival to the likes of BMW’s 1-series and Audi’s A3, although he didn't reveal any exact release date.

Lexus has been selling in cars in Europe since 1990 but it still commands less than 1% of the total market, something Arashima hopes to change with the introduction of a more affordable and more fuel-efficient model.

He also reaffirmed Lexus’ strategy to differentiate itself from its premium rivals by offering more hybrid models. He pointed out that the Lexus, together with Toyota, will sell between 50,000 and 60,000 hybrids this year and is expecting this level to rise to 100,000 by 2010.

Lexus preparing Project GS for SEMA show

Lexus preparing Project GS for SEMA show
As the annual Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas draws near, more details of the cars that will be on show there trickle out. One of the Lexus IS Fs that will be on display has already been revealed, and today the company has released a sketch of a GS design project that will also be at the show.

A total of four customized IS Fs will be at the Lexus SEMA booth, plus the Project GS, a modified GS 460 done by Five Axis. All of the cars are intended to follow up on the strong success of last year's IS F sales debut, which was accompanied by the F-Sport line of performance accessories for the IS 250 and 350.

The Project GS will be revealed Tuesday, November 4th, with the car's designer, Troy Sumitomo, on hand to discuss what has been done to the vehicle. Until then, the car's specs will remain secret. The Project IS F, however, will be returning to SEMA for a second year, this time with a bored and stroked 5.75L V8 engine for more power.

The four custom IS Fs on display will be built by Fox Marketing/Artisan Performance, Import Tuner Magazine/TEIN suspension, 0-60 Magazine and MotorworldHype. Each vehicle will feature a unique design perspective, from hardcore track-focused racer to stylish street cruiser.

An LX 570 by ICON 4x4 Design will also be on display, featuring a 'stealth' design that ICON calls 'anti-bling'.

WedsSport unveils IS350-based D1GP drift car

WedsSport unveils IS350-based D1GP drift car
Japanese tuning house WedsSport has been racing a specially tuned Lexus IS350 in the Japanese Super GT since early in the current season, but now the performance workshop has turned its attention to the growing world of drifting. Sticking with the Lexus IS model, WedsSport has created a special drifter complete with a custom engine and steering system that will compete in the upcoming D1GP championship.

Under the hood sits arguably Toyota's most famous engine, the 2JZ-GTE unit. This motor is usually found in the Toyota Supra, in which it managed to make between 225hp (168kW) and 310hp (231kW). However, the engine found in the WedsSport Lexus IS350 drift car has been extensively modified, and now puts out around 780hp (582kW) thanks to its HKS-sourced T04Z turbocharger and high-flow exhaust system.

A custom handling package, as well as an upgraded clutch and transmission, will help the car channel all that raw power to the road and hopefully pull off some spectacular drifts. In addition to producing a lot more power, the WedsSport Lexus IS350 drift car also features a custom widebody kit, a giant spoiler, and the usual manufacturer livery found on most drift cars.

Following its debut in the Japanese D1GP later this year, the car is destined to make a number of international appearances, including a showing in the U.S. early next year.
